“Every natural fact is a symbol of some spiritual fact.”Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature (1836)
Symbols meet us in nature, in the words we use every day, in literature, in Scripture and in art. Before any words about it, simply look: the pearl, the shell that held it, the water, the light. Whatever it brings to mind can wait a little before it is given a meaning.
It asks nothing of us yet. It simply waits to be noticed.
The Pearl in Our Words
Symbols already travel with us
“Pearls of wisdom.” “A string of pearls.” “A pearl of great price.” “The world is your oyster.”
We say these things about a saying worth keeping, a run of good days, something we would give much to have. None of them involves the sea, yet the listener understands at once.
That is the quiet work symbols do. They live in ordinary speech and shape how we see our lives, often without our noticing.
The Pearl: A Story to Live By
The merchant and the pearl
Jesus told many short stories drawn from ordinary life: a sower and his seed, yeast worked through dough, a treasure hidden in a field. Then he told of a merchant who dealt in pearls and was always looking for fine ones.
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it.”Matthew 13:45–46, NASB
That is the whole story. He had seen many pearls. He recognized this one. The story ends with the pearl in his hand.
Play the Game
We don’t always find a symbol. Sometimes a symbol seems to find us.
Each lesson in the course holds a game of hidden cards, and each image you uncover has a story to tell.
Carry It Into the Week
An optional invitation
If you like, sometime this week notice something you call precious: an object, a memory, a few words someone once said to you. Spend a moment with it, the way the merchant looked at his pearl. Nothing to write, nothing to submit.
Turning to the Gate
Your four-week journey
The pearl is a beginning. It grows layer upon layer, and over four weeks the course adds its own layers, one symbol at a time.
